Language Learning Principles

Language Learning Principles: How to learn any language

1. System VS. Goal

- What is a goal?
A goal is what you want to achieve.

For example, a student might want to get good grades in a certain class.

-What is a system?
A system is the process that makes you achieve your goal.

For example, a student might use different techniques to study and to score good on a test.

Why do we learn languages?

Simple. We learn the language to be able to speak the language; interact with the language, or being fluent. Learning new languages can help us in many different aspects, differentiating from person to person.

3 Language Learning Principles

Principle 1: Make Memories more Memorable

When you learn something, try to use the Four levels of Processing.

1. Structure: What is the structure of the question / word?
2. Sound: Do they connect when heard?
3. Concept: Is TOOL another word for instrument?
4. Personal Connection: How does the question connect to YOU?
When you think of something, you usually remember it as a picture. Try thinking the word "APPLE" in your mind. You would probably think of a picture of an apple. Connect things with pictures.

Principle 2: Maximize Laziness

Do you know what the Ebbinghaus Forgetting Curve is?

The Ebbinghaus Forgetting Curve is a graph that shows how much you remember what you have learned.

Rote Learning is a type of learning in where you repeat the words again and again. This is not good for long memory and you cannot go deeply into the subject. Try to use other effective methods of Learning to increase what you remember.

Principle 3: Don't Review. Recall

-Reviewing what you have learned is similar to rote learning. You just go over the stuff you have previously learned and learn it AGAIN. Instead of doing that, you can try to remember stuff that you have learned. This is called recalling. Recalling does have short term effects that are not as good as Reviewing, but as time passes, recalling stands out and can have much better effects on the learner.

Do you recall what the 3 Principles are? Let's go over them!

- Make Memories more Memorable!
- Maximize Laziness
- Don't Review; Recall.

I hope you have learned how to become a good language learner. Thank you :)
